2010 JET Departees DEPART!

Our latest batch of soon to be JETs will depart Canberra on the 24th. The very best of luck to Pablo Shopen and family, Herman Aguilera, Carly Amber, Mark Shew, Kieran McGuinness, and our lone CIR Jarra McIntyre.

Nara Candle Festival Planning Begins

That’s right folks, its that time of year again! We’re getting our booth for this year’s Nara Candle Fest up and running. This year is a big one as it is Nara’s 1300th anniversary. Its been suggested that a change of menu may be in order and we’re interested to hear what you think we should do.

Yakisoba and Okonomiyaki have been suggested but we’re hoping to hear some more ideas from you! Shoot your ideas to me at imoriyama05@yahoo.com or post them on the Yahoo Groups page. Keep in mind, if something is labor intensive that means more volunteers (like YOU), but as we will have beautiful weather this year that won’t be too much of a trial.

Speaking of volunteers, we are going to need folks to work the booth this year. Keep your eyes open for dates and details. I’ll send out a special notice once we get everything hammered down.

O-Shaberikai

We are looking to hold our next Shaberikai on Wednesday the 4th of August 2010 at Coo Izakaya Civic from 6pm onwards. For those who don’t know, the O-Shaberikai is a very informal monthly get-together where Japanese people staying in Canberra can meet Australians who have some interest in Japan. We do need to get a head count to make a reservation, so look out for a confirmation e-mail later next week with the finalized date and time and be sure to RSVP.

As always, all are welcome. C’mon out we’d love to see you!

News from Japan

A couple of missives from The Japan Times this week.

Southern Shinkansen SNAFU

“OSAKA (Kyodo) Sanyo Shinkansen Line service was suspended between Shin-Osaka and Okayama stations Thursday morning after two maintenance trains hit each other in a tunnel, affecting about 68,000 people, including summer holiday vacationers, West Japan Railway Co. officials said.”

Always during summer vacation!

Fighting for Peace and Internationalization

“JERUSALEM (Kyodo) Japanese men’s judo Olympic gold medalists Yasuhiro Yamashita and Kosei Inoue taught the martial art to some 50 Israeli and Palestinian children at a dojo in Jerusalem.”

Reach out and touch someone people. (And then throw them on the ground and have a bit of a wrestle)

Have a great week,

Adam C. Gastineau
JETAA President
